M-Lab Tests
M-Lab hosts a number of measurement tests, allowing you to check for everything from network speed and latency to blocking and throttling. Explore them below, and run a test to learn more about your connection.
M-Lab provides a set of tools that let you explore how your Internet connection is performing in real time. By running a test, you can measure key aspects of your connection, including speed, latency (delay), network blocking, and potential throttling by Internet providers. These tests offer a simple way to better understand the quality and reliability of your connection.
How M-Lab tests work
All M-Lab tests use what’s known as active measurement. This means tests only run when you choose to start them. M-Lab does not passively monitor your connection or track your activity in the background. When you run a test, the tool sends and receives synthetic data created specifically for measurement. This data is used solely to observe how your network responds under controlled conditions.
M-Lab tests do not access or analyze your everyday Internet use, such as emails, browsing, messages, or downloads. The tests also do not collect personally identifiable information about your online activity.

NDT (Network Diagnostic Tool)
Tests your connection speed, and provides a sophisticated diagnosis of problems limiting speed.
Reverse Traceroute
Measures the network path back to a user from selected network endpoints.
Neubot
DASH is designed to measure the quality of tested networks by emulating a video streaming player.
MSAK
MSAK (Measurement Swiss-Army Knife) implements a configurable Websocket-based throughput measurement protocol, and a UDP-based latency measurement protocol.
Wehe
Wehe uses your device to exchange Internet traffic recorded from real, popular apps like YouTube and Spotify, and attempts to tell you whether your ISP is giving different performance to an app's network traffic.

Essential services that support all M-Lab measurements
Packet Header Service (PCAP)
Collects packet headers for all incoming TCP flows and saves each stream of packet captures into a per-stream .pcap file.
TCP INFO
Collects statistics about the TCP connections running on the M-Lab platform using tcp-info.
Traceroute
Collects network path information for every connection to the M-Lab platform.
Data and Transparency
M-Lab is built on principles of openness and transparency.
To support research and public understanding of Internet performance, all test results are made publicly available. This includes the IP address used during the test, which helps researchers interpret network conditions and patterns. Test data is stored and published indefinitely. Once collected, individual test records cannot be removed. All M-Lab tools are open source and are developed and maintained by researchers studying Internet performance and connectivity.

BISmark
Allowed people to host a home router that also tests network performance over time.
MobiPerf
Measured network performance on mobile platforms.
NPAD (Network Path & Application Diagnostics)
Diagnosed common problems that impact last-mile broadband networks.
SamKnows
M-Lab hosted the off-net servers for SamKnows performance testing used in the FCC's Measuring Broadband America Program from 2009-2019.
Windrider
Attempted to detect whether a mobile provider was performing application or service specific differentiation until it was decommissioned on 01/17/2013. The source code is still available.
Glasnost
Glasnost tested for application-specific blocking or throttling, and was decommissioned on 07/07/2017. The source code is still available.
OONI Probe
Measured specific use cases of network interference.
Pathload2
Tested the available bandwidth of an Internet connection until it was decommissioned from the M-Lab platform on 12/21/2012. However, the data and source code are still available.
Shaperprobe
Shaperprobe attempted to measure traffic shaping. Shaperpobe was decommissioned from the M-Lab fleet on 5/11/2015.
